By Tammie Caldwell

One's body should be given enough nutrients so that it can do its functions properly. The only way to stay healthy would be to consume enough nutrients daily. It is for this purpose that people are recommended to take in their daily amount of soy vitamins. Here are the food you can have for that matter then.

First, you can have soymilk. The said milk is typically created from edible soybeans. Quite similar with cow's milk, this is the kind of milk that has high content of protein, omega-3 fatty acids, essential nutrients, and calcium. You should indulge yourself in the consumption of this kind of milk by adding this to your shakes or smoothies.

Tempeh. It is one of the best alternative to eat when you are a vegetarian. Its popularity has made it a well-recognized food already. Tofu. You will surely need to consider eating tofu, which is coagulated soymilk, as well. You will be asked to purchase this in blocks, quite similar to how you will with cheese. The tofu only has little flavor when it is taken on its own. However, you can make it have more flavor by cooking it together with other ingredients and adding seasoning.

Miso should be another one in the list. Typically, you can make miso with soybeans together with barley, rice, wheat, rye, and many other ingredients. The miso got a paste-like substance. You can then use it for spreads or sauces. However, the most common usage of the miso paste is the making of the miso soup.

Veggie burgers can be used when you want to increase your intake of the said nutrients. You will be required to add veggie burgers in your diet if you want to enjoy the benefits that vegetables can provide the body with. Normally, the veggie burgers can be made with wheat, rice, eggs, nuts, vegetables, and such.

Protein bars. When you want an extra boost of protein during workouts, then you should consider consumption of protein bars. It can help you get through the day so you should eat it when you need it the most. This is surely one helpful food you can have which can give you the necessary nutrients needed by your body.

Edamame can be very useful for your body as well. People know that edamame looks like baby soybeans. It is picked green from its plant and served as peas in a pod. If you plan to consume edamame, then you better boil it first. After boiling, you can then serve it as a snack after sprinkling salt on top.

Soy yogurt. It would be helpful to have this yogurt to replace your regular ones. The said yogurt, when taken regularly, will surely help your body healthy. The high content of nutrients, protein, and calcium on it helps. If you want to enjoy this yogurt, you just need to add this to soymilk or to smoothies.

Put On Your Own Oxygen Mask First!

by Nina
Supported Bridge Pose with Straight Legs
Yesterday I gave my regular private lesson to Richard, a very lovely and compassionate older man who works as a psychotherapist. He has a number of physical problems I’ve been helping him with, though I’ve also tried to help him with his insomnia (he tends to be somewhat anxious). It’s very rewarding to teach him as he says he always feels better, both physically and emotionally, after our sessions.

Although we’ve been focusing on core strength lately, he showed up saying, “I really need to work on stress management today!” He explained that due to the divisive election, his therapy sessions in Berkeley, California, had been particularly stressful for him, as all his clients needed to talk about it. So election discussion for him was going on all day long, every day! And of course he had no choice but to let his clients talk about whatever they needed to. But his stress levels were worse than usual, and his blood pressure levels had actually gone up!

Well, as many of you may know by now, stress management is one of my areas of expertise, so I immediately came up with a new sequence for him. Since he tends toward anxiety, I knew that restorative yoga, meditation, and breath work wouldn’t be that good for him (he gets anxious attending to his breath), so I said, “We’ll do a supported inversion practice today.” (See All About Supported Inversions for information on these poses and Why You Should Love Your Baroreceptors for why they work.)

I’ll give you the sequence at the end of this post. But the thing I really wanted to share with you is that as he started to do the sequence, and it was obvious to both of us that he was starting to relax, I said to him, “Please don’t feel guilty about taking this time to relax and restore yourself. It will not only be beneficial for you, but it will allow you to do a better job in the important work you do.”

And he smiled at me and replied, “So it’s like ‘Put on your own oxygen mask first’?”

“Yes, that’s it!” I said. So the takeaway from that is that doing what you need to stay calm, clear, and focused isn’t an indulgence; it’s the best way to keep yourself strong for the work you are committed to, whether it’s political action, volunteering for your favorite cause, or caring for a loved one.

As Richard went through the practice, I kept checking in with him how he was feeling and which poses were working for him. I know from experience that everyone is different in which poses they enjoy, probably depending on physical issue and body types (and who knows what else). I wanted to make sure that if poses wasn’t helping, he should come out. And if a pose was really working well, I’d leave him in it longer. To my great surprise, a pose I’d never taught him before, Supported Bridge pose with Straight Legs, felt absolutely wonderful to him! (I thought maybe because he has back issues he wouldn’t enjoy it.) So we both learned something important. And though my plan was to have him stay in that pose for 5 minutes, I asked him if he wanted another 5, and he said, yes, please! (I photographed him in the pose so he could easily recreate the propping we used at home.)

So the takeaway from that is that if you’re doing supported inverted poses (or restorative poses for that matter), it’s worth experimenting with them all because you really never know which one is going to be the most effective for you. Just go in with an open mind, and be willing to come out of the poses that don’t actually help.

If you have the time and want to share what you do to stay calm and focused during challenging times, please leave a comment!

Richard’s Supported Inversion Sequence

I told him if he does this sequence (or any of the poses) at home to listen to relaxing music to take his mind off his anxious thoughts.

1. Reclined Leg Stretch version 1, to stretch the legs for the Supported Downward-Facing Dog pose and Supported Standing Forward Bends. 1.5 minutes each side.
2. Half Downward-Facing Dog pose, classic version, to stretch the shoulders and lengthen the torso to prepare for the same supported inverted poses. 1.5 minutes (with me assisting)
3. Supported Downward-Facing Dog pose, with head on a bolster plus blanket (he is on the stiff side) and a strap around the arms. For 2 minutes (this was challenging for him so I had him come out early.)
4. Standing Forward Bend, version 4, forearms and head on a chair seat). For 3 minutes (he loves this).
5. Widespread Standing Forward Bend, forearms and head on a chair seat. For 3 minutes (new to him, but he enjoyed it).
6. Supported Bridge Pose with straight legs. For 10 minutes.
6. Easy Inverted Pose. For 10 minutes. With a body scan spoken by me.
Yes, this sequence really helped him!

Stress Relief From Your Basalt CO Wellness Chiropractor

By Tabatha Fickel

If your life is difficult because you are anxious or stressed out, you are not alone. Many people in Colorado are currently dealing with levels of stress that are dangerously high and they need to find some way to find relief. With busy schedules and little free time, it can seem impossible to unwind and relax each day. However, you can receive help with stress relief from your local Aspen CO wellness chiropractor and it may be easier than you imagine.

Stress affects the entire body and makes blood pressure rise and muscles in the back and neck become tense and stiff. This can lead to frequent headaches and bouts of insomnia. Chiropractic therapy can include several types of massage techniques and this not only relaxes all your muscles, it has a soothing effect on both body and mind.

Although acupuncture has been around for thousands of years, it is still effective today for stress related problems. Acupuncture philosophy concerns energy meridians which run through the entire body, carrying life force (qi). When qi cannot freely circulate throughout each area of the body, you could be feeling ill or in pain, and acupuncture releases these blockages.

Exercise is great for overcoming stress and tension, but it can be hard to find the right exercise to incorporate into your schedule. Your chiropractic doctor can provide pilates training which is proven to help you relax and refocus. Plus, you will be around others for motivation.

Stress can be the result of a misaligned spine. Many nerves in your body run through the spine and the slightest misalignment issue can cause these nerves to become irritated or impinged. Chiropractic adjustment restores your spine to its natural condition, relieving many symptoms.

Your chiropractic professional in Aspen is there with many different alternative medicine options. If you wish, you can unwind and enjoy a medical spa experience. Once you have the right kind of chiropractic care, your stress and tension may simply vanish.

Home Practice The Best Way to Improve Your Health and Well Being Rerun

by Timothy McCall
Bed in a Mirror by Nina Zolotow
"If you are taking yoga classes but not practicing at home, you may be missing the best—and potentially most therapeutic—part of yoga. Your personal practice is where the deepest work happens, when you go inward and go at your own pace."—from Yoga As Medicine

This quotation from my book got posted on Facebook the other day and generated quite a bit of interest. But not everyone, particularly those who only take classes, agrees with the statement. A woman came up to me at a yoga conference earlier this year to say she’d heard me make a similar comment at a workshop I taught in Los Angeles a few years ago, and it made her really angry. It’s easy to understand that reaction when your experience in class has been so positive, and even healing.

But now scientific research seems to back up the notion that a regular home practice really is the key to health and well-being, perhaps particularly so as we get older. A study recently published in the journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine by researchers at the University of Maryland and the National Institutes of Health found that, among more than 1000 practitioners of Iyengar yoga, the frequency of home practice predicted positive health more than how long you’ve been practicing or how many classes you attend per week. According to the article Frequency of yoga practice predicts health: results of a national survey of yoga practitioners:

“Frequency of home practice favorably predicted (p < .001): mindfulness, subjective well-being, BMI, fruit and vegetable consumption, vegetarian status, sleep, and fatigue.”

In other words, those who practiced at home the most reported better health and well-being, greater awareness of themselves and others, improved sleep, less fatigue, and healthier body weight. They were even more likely to eat their vegetables!

The study bore out something else I’ve been teaching for years: when you combine the various tools in the yoga toolbox including asana, breathing practices, meditation and even study of yoga philosophy you tend to get even better results. As the authors put it, “an intense practice involving all aspects of yoga practice may be more beneficial to health than a less intense practice that includes only one or two aspects of yoga practice, such as just practicing the physical poses or breath work.”

There also appeared to be additional benefits for combining different types of asana practices, such as standing poses, vigorous practices like Sun Salutations, restorative poses including Savasana, and inversions like Shoulderstand. Different practices appeared to be particularly beneficial for specific conditions. Vigorous asana and inversions seemed to help the most with insomnia and body weight, whereas, according to the authors, “because breath work and meditation appear to influence mindfulness and well-being, they may be particularly useful in treating conditions such as depression and anxiety.”

One finding that may be of particular interest to readers of this blog has to do with fatigue. Overall, older practitioners had less fatigue than younger practitioners, but both groups improved when they did yoga. But it appears to take less practice for older practitioners to experience improvements in energy.

As for the woman who was mad at me for saying that a home practice was more important than going to classes, she went on to say that, almost despite herself, she did try doing her yoga at home. Now she does it regularly and believes it’s the most important part of her practice. She thanked me profusely, though of course most of all she can thank herself!

Video of the Week Put Your Boots On!

This pose is inspired by the "Take Your Boots Off" balance pose that Melina Meza taught when she subbed for me while I was away last week, as well as by my own experience going through TSA about four times in the last ten days with my fall boots on. Here's a practical balance work for the fall/winter season.

How An Ottawa Marriage Counseling Clinic Can Help In Your Relationship

By Minnie Whitley

The happiness and strong bond in marriages comes with a lot of effort. When you come together and begin a relationship, you hope that things will work out. However, somewhere down the line, problems start striking and the next thing you think of is initiating a divorce. Opting to consult a primed Ottawa marriage counseling clinic can help salvage a relationship that is about to collapse.

Divorce is not one of the things you should opt for in relations, but when there seems to be no other way to resolve issues, you have no other option but to accept it. But, the problem is that many people go for divorce without weighing its impact in their future. When divorce finally happens, it inflicts wounds among the feelings of people, and children are particularly affected negatively.

Blame and conflicts arising from expression of different opinions may cause a relationship to become sour. If partners are acting out on ill feelings then an intervention is needed. Negative feelings such as disappointment and resentment could turn out to be hurtful as well as harmful behaviors. Negative feelings could be caused by other things in unions that you are not talking about them.

If you do not speak your mind about an issue affecting you, then you may find that you express it through resentments and disagreements. You might mask the feelings but they will not last for long, and soon you will find yourselves in a much more difficult situation. There reaches are point where you cannot pretend anymore and the anger, frustration, hatred, and ill feelings show up heavily.

However, with help of a counselor, the couples can understand their problems and the best ways to resolve them. If communication has deteriorated, you might want to seek assistance from counselors. Communication helps in resolving issues, but when you find that you are not communicating, it means you cannot express your opinions or talk about something that is hurting you.

Negative communication will lead to one or both partners feeling depressed, wanting to withdraw from conversations, feeling disregarded, and insecure. Marriages that are troubled often require coaching in matters pertaining to relationships. Couples counseling can help partners overcome different problems including cultural differences and issues of divorce. The relationship therapy can also help partners having affairs outside the union, loss of job, money issues, as well as troubles in communicating.

In addition, it also depends on how you are prepared to change your life. If both partners are willing and committed to take a therapy session from counselors, it makes it possible to come in terms and arrive at a solution. Being honest and trustful is what will save you from such troubles. People end up in affairs outside the union because of other underlying reasons that the couples may not understand. If a counselor perceives that the relationship may not work anymore and from your discussions, it is determined that it is better for you to part, then you might go ahead and call for divorce.

However, you might still salvage the union if you consult a counselor. The problem is that recovering from issues related to affairs is hard. It makes you have ill feeling, feel depressed, and stressed. Such mental indisposition may compel you to make the wrong decisions. This is where the power of forgiving is witnessed among partners. With help of a counselor, couples are able to understand their problems and work out on a common thinking. Working together in resolving issues can help bring troubled marriages to the right direction.

This prepares the practitioners for any situation where it is necessary to escape or fight back. This discipline makes it much easier to overcome both physical or mental obstacles.

Furthermore, it keeps you in shape. This exercise works the whole body. This is perfect for men and women alike who want to lose wait or get distinct cut in their muscles. Even better, there is no need for fancy equipment. Parkour uses a variety of common activities like jumping, crawling, throwing, climbing and running. Natural obstacles may be used, although man-made barriers are also common.

Moreover, this exercise can help in mental conditioning. Agility and physical strength may not be enough in certain situations. A traucer will have to think of the most efficient ways that can get them through the obstacles in no time. He must come up with more creative methods that do not require taking down fences, barriers and walls.

On top of it all, parkour is a fun sport. All traucers agree that this exercise is quite entertaining, despite its rigidity. Many even consider it addictive. Perhaps it is due to the feeling of freedom, the idea of not holding back or the adrenaline rush of getting into something quite dangerous. Having done something out of ordinary can also boost one's confidence.

Unfortunately, this art is not saved from contentions. It may have been caused by various misconceptions about the sport. This discipline is oftentimes associated with death defying stunts. Many think it is unsafe and risky. The truth is, this is only one of the aspects of the sports. Traucers still value safety. In fact, many stunts are executed in low grounds. Nobodys want to get injured, even the parkour practitioners.

Some practitioners have also been wrongfully accused of property damage. This is an utter misperception. Truth be told, the traucers think highly of their training spots. It has been a significant part of their exercise that damaging such is the least they want to do. Parkour practitioners even take better care of these properties than non-practitioners.

Before engaging to this exercise, interested individuals must remember a few pointers. For starters, a physician's clearance is a must. This is a rigid exercise that can be agitating to one's physical condition. Make sure that you have been given a go by your physician. During your training, wear a pair of durable and comfortable running shoes and workout clothes to keep yourself snug.

Learning the basic foundation of parkour NY is also a must. As a kind of sport, this requires discipline. This is not just about the physical activities. More importantly, these exercises must be in accordance with the guiding philosphy. This sport aims to instill a sense of altruism. This aims to develop one's longevity, self-discipline and self-confidence.

A Guide To Enhancing Your Personal Energy And Self Improvement Ontario

By Andrew Jones

When you experience a low self-esteem and personal energy, getting things done becomes a burden. These are the times you get a clear and loud signal from your body and mind compelling you to alter something in your personal life. It is quite impossible to explain the cause for this feeling by focusing on things that are outside of you. This is simply because your life always a mirror of something you do inside your mind. Even if it caused by something you do in your mind, you can increase your Personal energy and self improvement Ontario in many different ways.

No matter who you are, there are things in your daily environment that can have a negative influence on your self-esteem. Therefore, it's important for you to protect yourself so that those influences don't affect you and bring you down. Which of these elements should you avoid?

Increase your level of individual respect. If you have a tendency of putting everything you want in life hindmost everything else, you don't have enough respect for yourself to stay firmly behind what you want. This is a highly effective way of draining your vitality. You may do this because you think you are not as valuable as everybody else. This is a false belief. The fact that we humans behave otherwise does not change the fact that every one of us is born as equal to everybody else. All of us come with the ability to think, observe, reflect and accept.

Therefore, for your own peace of mind and to boost self-esteem, avoid these types of work situations. A little healthy competition is fine, but not rabidly so. It should not overtake common sense, appreciation for others, or a genuine sense of accomplishment without the feeling of "beating" the other guy.

With self-improvement comes self-confidence. Once you begin to take control of your life and everything around it you will start to feel more self-confident. You can help this process by continually telling yourself that you are now the boss! Look at yourself in the mirror and love the person who grins back at you. Once you begin to love yourself the rest will follow.

Get more physical active. Our body is not constructed to not be used. Then it gets rusty and starts to hurt. When your body hurts you start pity yourself. This perspective leads into negative thinking which drains your energy. Physical laziness is rooted within negative self-talk.

You need to do two things: First, start to observe what you say to yourself in different situations and replace it with positive inner self-talk. Secondly decide to find a physical activity you like to do and start doing it.

In the end, you are the one who is the most responsible for who you become, regardless of your beginnings. Individual esteem is as much your responsibility as it is of those around you. Therefore, simply deciding that you're going to surround your with positive things, learn to do what you love, and taking your cues from positive people with their own high self-esteem will go a long way toward helping you reach this path.
