What is Limau Purut or Kaffir Lime

[Extracted from the web page of www.pahang-delights.com]

Limau purut, the Malay name for Kaffir Lime, or its scientific name Citrus hystrix of the Rutaceae family, is well known for its medicinal properties, not only by the Malays in the old days but also by modern scientific researchers.

In Pahang (3rd Largest State in Malaysia), besides its usage in adding flavor to traditional Malay dishes and cuisines, like the rendang, and tomyam, it is sometimes used as herbal medicine to treat normal skin disorders.

It is not actually used for treatment of chronic skin disorders like psoriasis or eczema, but only for ordinary skin irritations that normally require basic general medications.

Limau purut contains tannin, triterpenouid and saponin.

It is used in herbal medicines and traditional treatments, as the fruit and especially its leaves, have those special properties to encourage the growth of skin.

The Malays of Pahang, in the old days, used limau purut juice to treat hair and promote healthy growth of hair follicles.

Nowadays to achieve this better, hair is first washed with ordinary shampoo, and then the hair and scalp are washed with the juice extracted from the fruit.

The juice is then left for a few minutes on the head to let it soak into the hair follicles, and then the head and hair is rinsed finally with plain water.

To alleviate colds, lack of energy and tiredness, the juice extracted from the fruit is mixed with plain water and drank three times a day. The juice actually tastes very sour and bitter, perhaps a lot more bitter than lemon juice. It is traditionally believed that it is good for blood circulation.
The leaves are also utilised as one of the ingredients in traditional Malay sauna bath or "mandi wap" because of its fragrance, while the essence of the fruit is now popularly used in modern aromatherapy.

Why is Limau Purut used in Silat ?

Limau purut also plays an important part in the rituals of some forms of the Malay art of self-defence, silat.
It is normally used in the ritual of bathing after graduation where the limau purut fruit is cut and blended with plain water and then students are bathed as part of spiritual bathing by their Malay silat master.

The reason it is used in silat is that it is said to have some special qualities, like invigorating the senses during self-defence training.

Perhaps its fragrant and sharp odor contain elements that provide some peculiar and distinctive aromatherapic properties to the brain.

Besides the silat rituals, limau purut is also used in the cleaning of keris, the deadly Malay weapon, and other iron or metal-based utensils. Besides being a good cleanser of rusts, the juice is also a great anti-rust agent.
Cleaning the keris is done by swiping the keris with the half-cut fruit and ensuring its juices are spread on both sides of the keris. The keris is then finally cleaned and rinsed with plain water. Periodic cleaning of the keris will ensure its longevity by keeping rusts at bay.

The Limau Purut Tree

The leaves of this fruit are oblong or egg-shaped, and seemed to be a combination and linking of two leaves, like wings.

The top side of the leaf is dark green and shiny, while the bottom side of the leaf is lighter or yellowish green in color.

The leaf will give a fresh lime (or lemon-like) fragrance when squashed with the fingers. And in traditional Malay dishes, the leaves are added to give the dish the unique taste of lime.

The flower of this fruit is star-shaped, and reddish white or yellowish in color.

The fruit is smaller than an ordinary apple or orange, and round and pear-like in shape with uneven skin, having sort of big pimples or "mini-volcanoes" on the skin !

Ugly skin, not handsome or pretty at all, but, aww, it doesn't matter. It's what inside that counts, right ?

Well, so much for now on the limau purut, the herbal plant with medicinal and health properties, and used by the Malays in Pahang for many purposes.

It is generally used, as mentioned above, in some recipes of traditional Malay food and dishes, as a cleaning agent for metal parts, as herbal remedies for hair and skin disorders, and many more.

Limau purut or kaffir lime is a very useful fruit indeed and used quite extensively especially in the rural areas of Pahang.

Do look out for it whenever you’re in Pahang (Malaysia).

To Peel or Not to Peel Working with Bridge Pose

by Baxter

Bridge Pose (from "Yoga: The Poetry of the Body")
I received this question a while back from one of our readers and thought today was the perfect day to address it:

“I often hear teachers instruct to come out of Bridge 'one vertebra at a time.' What are your thoughts on this? Is this healthier for the spine? Or is it in fact better to maintain the lower lumbar curve?”

It turns out that most of my first teachers would encourage just such an action when instruction for Bridge pose (Setu Bandha) with bent knees. In those days, I was practicing a style of yoga in which we would hold the poses for several minutes once in the shape of the pose. My instructors would often say to come up into Bridge one vertebrae at a time, as if your spine were taped to the floor and you were slowly peeling the tape off the floor. And they would suggest a similar action upon exiting the pose only in reverse: lower down slowly, one vertebra at a time, as if you were pressing the “tape” of the spine back onto the floor.

This way of entering or exiting Bridge pose is one of two basic ways I still think are valid and reasonable ways to work in the pose. The second way that I instruct entering and exiting is as follows: From Constructive Rest position (supine, knees bent and heels about 4 inches from your hips), establish the normal, slightly arched shape of your lumbar spine. Lift your hips straight up as you push down into your feet, like an elevator going up a few floors, maintaining the neutral arch of the lower back. To come down, lower your hips straight down, like an elevator returning to the lobby floor.

The obvious question would be what are the advantages to the two different ways of getting in and out of the pose? The Peel Method, as I call it, is particularly well suited to the generally stiff student who does not have any lower back problems, specifically, but not exclusively, lumbar disc issues. For the healthy, stiff student, this way of moving in and out of Bridge pose creates more movement in certain directions between the individual bones of the lower spine, a bit more flexion (forward bending) than extension. So you can create better movement in a stiff part of the body using the Peel Method. And it is a fine way to work with healthy students who have normal flexibility as well.

However, in my specialty Back Care class, where lots of students have bulging or inflamed discs or structures in the lower back, there may be some instability and/or too much mobility that can result in increased pain. In addition, flexion (such as in a forward folding, rounded spine) which as I mentioned above, happens with the Peel Method, could potentially worsen disc problems and even run-of-the-mill general lower back pain. So the Elevator Method provides more stability to the lower spine, as well as encouraging a more neutral or natural curve in the lumber spine. I find that almost all of my Back Care students can not only do this variation without pain, but also seem to benefit from the overall strengthening of the back body muscles that come form this particular back bend.

There will always be some students who are exceptions to the above recommendations, and so each individual has to try the methods out for themselves and see which feels better for their body and seems to have the overall desired effects from regular practice. And, as with all asana, there are certainly other creative ways to get in and out of Bridge, so playing around to find a new way of working in the pose can add some fun to your home practice as well. I personally like to mix up the way I enter and exit poses a bit, so that I don’t get stuck in a rut of doing things the same way each time. This way of varying things keeps my attention more clearly focused on the task at hand, so I am more present with my regular asana practice. And this cultivation of moment-by-moment awareness in my yoga practice has great benefit for my everyday activities as well. In this way, I can move beyond the mere performance of yoga poses and reap the deeper benefits that yoga has to offer. So, play around with Bridge pose this week and see what you discover for yourself.

What To Benefit Or Risk When Buying Vision Vivi Nova Tank

By Nita McKinney

Smoking is one of the things that a lot of people are against to nowadays. This is because of the health risks posed not only to the person who smokes but to the ones who inhale the smoke too. This is the reason why people make use of alternatives for the smoke. A good example of that is the e-cigarettes such as Vision Vivi Nova Tank.

There are surely various benefits that one can take advantage of when it comes to the said e-cigarette. Compared to the standard cigarette, the person does not have to worry about those cancer-causing chemicals such as tar. There is absolutely no trace of tar in a stick of e-cigarette so it is absolutely safe.

It is also the best way to keep out of trouble for the non-smokers. There is no harmful side effects to the non-smokers if the smokers make use of this electronic cigarette. Not only the smokers themselves but the non-smokers are kept safe as well. One does not have to be afraid of the smoke since this electronic cigarette gives off water vapor.

Any fire hazard can be avoided with the e-cig too. If the person requires a lighter or match just to light up the normal cigarette, that is not the case when it comes to the e-cig. All it needs is to have its battery charge up. It will then stimulate the e-cig, which is usually in the form of that red cherry light at one end of the e-cig when people takes a puff.

It is also an option that is the least expensive for those who are fond of smoking. It is a known fact that one refill of the electronic cigarette's cartridge will cost significantly lower comapred to a single carton filled with the traditional cigarette. It will be a huge saving on one's budget.

The electronic cigarette is also the kind of smoking paraphernalia that the person can use despite the smoking ban in well-known public establishments. After all, the electronic cigarette does not really violate this law. The person can easily smoke this electronic cigarette inside any establishment upholding the no smoking law.

The person may be blinded by the benefits of the electronic cigarette though. It is also a given to take heed to the disadvantages one has to take when smoking the said option. It is not all benefits when it comes to this type of cigarette. The person is the one to decide on this in the end, after all.

First of all, the taste of this cigarette is different from the standard ones. Instead of the normal flavor of the standard cigarettes, the person can choose from a wide variety of flavors which even includes cherry. There are even times when people can choose a chocolate-flavored e-cigarette.

The battery needs to be recharged while the cartridge needs to be refilled. This means that the person will have to go through a lot of trouble. If the person wants to use the Vision Vivi Nova Tank, then he or she will have to go through all these routines just to have a smoke. Although it is much better than standard cigarettes, it is still a hassle.

Yoga Asanas Endurance Training or Resistance Training

by Ram
Thin Branches by Melina Meza
Endurance training improves functional capacity while resistance training improves muscle strength and endurance. While the anaerobic system enables muscles to recover for the next burst, aerobic system ensures that the energy demands are continuously met during the exercise regimen. Therefore, training for many sports demands that both energy-producing systems be developed. The question is: where do yoga asanas fit into the above mentioned definitions? The answer becomes very important in terms of regeneration and renewal of muscle stem cells with yoga.

After carefully researching several sites, I have come to the conclusion that yoga is both an endurance training system as well as strength training. Before talking about that in detail, let me review some of the terms:

Endurance Training:
This kind of training is what we refer to as aerobic exercise. It may involve bicycling, walking on a treadmill, swimming, rowing, cross-country skiing and other exercises that generally increase stamina and endurance. Since endurance training generally refers to training the aerobic system as opposed to anaerobic system, this type of training primarily employs the slow twitch (type 1) fibers and increases their efficiency and resistance to fatigue. Endurance in sport is closely tied to the execution of skill and technique.

Resistance/Strength Training:
Resistance training or strength training is a type of physical exercise that induces muscular contraction that helps builds the strength, anaerobic endurance, and size of skeletal muscles. Strength training is primarily an anaerobic activity, uses the fast twitch muscle system (type 2 fibers) and provides significant functional benefits and improvement in overall health and well-being, including increased muscle, tendon, ligament strength and toughness, improved joint function, increased bone density, increased metabolism, improved cardiac function, and elevated HDL (good) cholesterol. Strength training increases the force output of the muscle through incremental weight increases and also uses various forms of exercises and equipment to target specific muscle groups.

Anaerobic Exercise:
Anaerobic exercise is typically used by athletes in non-endurance sports to promote strength, speed and power, and by body builders to build muscle mass. It involves using muscle energy systems that develop differently compared to aerobic exercise and lead to greater performance in short duration, high-intensity activities, which typically last from few seconds to up to about couple of minutes. Anaerobic exercises trigger lactic acid fermentation and recruit the fast twitch muscle systems (also known as Type 2 fibers). If the intensity of the exercise exceeds the rate with which the cardiovascular system can supply muscles with oxygen, it results in buildup of lactate, making it impossible to continue the exercise. Unpleasant effects of lactate buildup initially include the burning sensation in the muscles, and may eventually include nausea and even vomiting if the exercise is continued.

Aerobic Exercise: In contrast to anaerobic exercise, aerobic exercise includes lower-intensity activities performed for longer periods of time. Aerobic means "in air” and refers to the use of oxygen to adequately meet energy demands during exercise Generally, light-to-moderate intensity activities that are sufficiently supported by aerobic metabolism can be performed for extended periods of time. Activities include, but is not limited to, walking, long, slow runs, rowing, and cycling, all of which require a great deal of oxygen to generate the energy needed for prolonged exercise. Aerobic exercises generally use slow twitch muscle fibers or Type I fibers that are slow to fatigue and suited for endurance.

Reasons why Hatha Yoga is Endurance Training

1. Breath: Endurance training is all about using the aerobic system and refers to the use of oxygen to adequately meet energy demands during exercise. Similarly, it is not yoga if you don’t breathe. Breath practice is an integral part of yoga, and it is very common for practitioners and students as well to use the back-of-throat nose breathing called ujjayi pranayam, which lengthens inhalations and increases lung capacity. This in turn delivers more oxygen to the body and helps with overall performance and efficiency. In addition, the increased flow of oxygen relieves soreness and also enhances tissue repair.

2. Endurance: Endurance training improves functional capacity and requires the use of physical and mental strength. In yoga, physical strength requires for us to cover more ground with fewer steps, develop a longer natural stride and smoother and steadier pace. To achieve this we need flexible hip flexors for greater hip flexion, well-lubricated joints, and properly stretched muscles. Holding a certain yoga pose for a long time requires discipline and commitment. This helps in not only strengthening the muscles but it also builds confidence and slows down the chattering in mind; the practice of simply holding the pose helps to overcome mental negativity and the fear of pain. It is also a common practice to incorporate several minutes of meditation either before or after a yoga asana class that helps with concentration and to develop the mental strength.

3. Core Strength: Endurance training not only increases stamina but endurance as well. Yoga asanas that focus on abdominal strengthening keep a body strong, centered, and powerful. Yoga core strengthening poses not only assist in building strong abdominal muscles but also help to strengthen and protecting the back and hips.

4. Focus:
Training in endurance sports (including, but not limited to, bicycling, swimming, rowing, and cross-country skiing) requires developing an inward, mindful state of being, and endurance training athletes are always encouraged to “stay in the moment.” Focus helps you understand and follow the energy and action of a yoga pose and also helps you develop mental fitness. Yoga practitioners thus constantly focus on their inhalation or exhalation and on every movement and nuance of a pose.

Reasons why Hatha Yoga is Resistance Training

Resistance training or strength training involves a lot of muscular contraction that helps build the strength, anaerobic endurance, and size of skeletal muscles thereby providing functional benefits in muscles, tendon, ligaments and joints. Strength training uses various forms of exercises to target specific muscle groups. Yoga uses the body’s own weight as resistance to build strength and balance thus strength gains are achieved without elaborate and expensive weight-training equipment. Yoga poses place the body in many positions that not only require strength but also require contraction of certain specific muscles (referred to as an isometric contraction) to hold the position. In addition, muscular contractions actually help more muscle fibers to be recruited, resulting in improved strength gains. While this does not result in acquiring bulky muscles, continuous muscular contraction helps to lengthen, tone and strengthen the muscles. A continuous flow sequence that calls for moving into several poses sequentially is a physically demanding practice that provides students with opportunities for continued strength gains.

Conclusion

In conclusion, yoga increases muscle strength, power and endurance through weighted exercises. By holding the body in specific poses, yoga helps to improve balance, strength and stamina. Certain postures improve circulation, digestion, balance, flexibility and agility. Keeping the body in certain postures and focusing intensely on moving through and holding each of the poses not only helps to improve strength, balance and concentration but also builds endurance. Thus, in my opinion, a consistent yoga practice is both strength and endurance training.

Watch out for the sequel article to understand how this aspect of yoga asana relates to regeneration and renewal of muscle stem cells with yoga, an important component of healthy aging.
