Shingles may lead to Stroke and Heart attack

shingles herpes
Herpes zoster can cause shingles, a painful condition with serious complications
Herpes zoster, also known as shingles, is linked to increased rates of acute cardiovascular events such as ischemic stroke and myocardial infarction, or heart attack, according to research published in PLOS Medicine.

Herpes zoster is a common virus, affecting a million Americans each year, with potentially serious consequences.

The virus causes both chicken pox and shingles. Following chickenpox, the virus remains inactive, or dormant, within the body.

If it becomes active again, which can be after many years, it can cause shingles, a painful, blistering skin rash that can be complicated by prolonged, severe, disabling pain - a condition called post-herpetic neuralgia (PHN).

Shingles can appear at any age but particularly in people over 60, those who had chickenpox before the age of 1 year, or individuals with a weakened immune system.

A person who has direct contact with the shingles rash and has not previously had either chickenpox or the vaccine can develop chickenpox but not shingles. However, chickenpox can be so mild that people do not notice it at the time; they may later develop shingles.

It is not yet clear why the virus suddenly becomes active again.

Increased cardiovascular risk after herpes zoster

Acute cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), including ischemic stroke and myocardial infarction (MI), are major causes of morbidity and mortality in the US. A better understanding is needed of what causes acute CVDs and how they can be prevented.

Acute infections are thought to lead to CVDs because of dysfunction within the blood vessels, in which plaques rupture in the artery wall, increasing the risk of blood clots.

In 2006, a targeted vaccination program for those aged 60 years or older was introduced in the US in an effort to prevent zoster-associated morbidity.

Caroline Minassian and colleagues from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in the UK wanted to measure the short-term increased risk of stroke and MI after zoster, as well as the impact of zoster vaccination.

The team identified 42,954 Medicare beneficiaries aged 65 years and over who had a herpes zoster diagnosis and an ischemic stroke, and 24,237 beneficiaries who had a herpes zoster diagnosis and MI during a 5-year period.

The researchers then calculated the chance of having stroke or MI within 12 months of a zoster diagnosis, compared with times when the patient did not have the virus, known as the baseline period. They also adjusted for age.

Among those diagnosed with herpes zoster within the past year, there was a 2.4-times higher chance of an ischemic stroke and 1.7 times higher chance of MI in the first week after herpes zoster, compared with the baseline period. The risk decreased gradually over the 6 months following the herpes zoster diagnosis.

Ischemic stroke and MI incidence ratios appeared to be the same regardless of whether individuals had been vaccinated against zoster or not.

Limitations include the fact that major life events and stress were not taken into account, and that only a few participants had been vaccinated, thus reducing the ability to detect the effect of vaccination.
The authors say:
"These findings enhance our understanding of the temporality and magnitude of the association between zoster and acute cardiovascular events."
A previous study published by Medical News Today suggests that a higher rate of stroke is linked to shingles.

Pregnancy and Floaters

Together with many other bodily changes, pregnancy can affect the eyes and quality of vision. Hormonal changes during pregnancy are normally responsible for these changes. In most instances these changes are temporary, but occasionally they may indicate more serious conditions. Any concerns over vision problems or eye related changes during pregnancy should trigger consultations with the obstetrician and ophthalmic experts.

Due to hormonal changes pregnant women may experience anything from blurred vision and dry eyes, to irritation, especially for contact lens wearers. Diabetes sufferers may also be prone to the development or worsening of diabetic retinopathy during pregnancy.

Pregnant women complaining of seeing spots in vision should be taken very seriously, because these dark spots may be scotomata. These are stable and typically affect a larger area of the field vision, unlike floaters, which move across the field of vision and are quite normal, whether pregnant or not. Scotomata can be an indication of preeclampsia or eclampsia, which are pregnancy complications that can cause dangerously high blood pressure. Although unusual visual problems may arise, in most cases, eye damage is limited and normal vision will return on resolution of the high blood pressure.

Clearly, the best course of action is to seek professional help as soon as any eye problems become noticeable.

Pratyahara and Healthy Aging

by Ram
Fern by Melina Meza
In the Yoga Sutras by Patanjali we are introduced to the eight rungs/limbs/steps of yoga whose practice helps us to develop attention as a tool to discriminate between ignorance and awareness and between truth and illusion, which is the means for liberation or enlightenment. Pratyahara is rung five of the eight rungs. Verse 2.54 in the Yoga Sutras describes Pratyahara as:

sva vishaya asamprayoge chittasya svarupe anukarah iva indriyanam pratyaharah

When the mental organs of senses and actions (indriyas) cease to be engaged with the corresponding objects in their mental realm, and assimilate or turn back into the mind-field from which they arose, this is called pratyahara. —trans. by Swami Jnaneshvara.

Check any commentary or text on this topic and the term “pratyahara” would be defined as “withdrawal of senses.” However, the concept of withdrawal of senses may be difficult to comprehend for I have witnessed a few teachers in some of the yoga teacher’s training gently brushing off this topic. During the course of her blog interview with Nina and Shari when asked about how she adapted her yoga practice through peri-menopause and menopause, Judith Laster remarked, “As I entered peri-menopause, I noticed a definite shift of my interest. It was as if a natural pratyahara was taking place.” Ever wondered what Judith meant by that statement?

Personally speaking, “withdrawal of senses” does not appeal to me. In this present world, staying with a family, raising kids and paying college tuitions, doing our jobs and facing challenges at work, etc. all require the coordinated usage of the five senses. One cannot withdraw the senses from our daily life’s duties unless we give up on everything and retire to the mountains. So I like to define pratyahara as “using our senses with total/complete awareness.” Our five senses serve as portals or gateways into our body, mind and consciousness. We are what we eat, smell, see, hear and touch. It is through these senses that we absorb the world around us. If we take in harmonious impressions through our senses, we will in turn be healthier. If we take in that which is unhealthy, the mind and body suffers. If we are not aware about what we draw in through our senses, it can lead to physical and mental instability. The human body and mind can survive on low-quality sensory impressions but it cannot thrive. In order to maximize life potential, each person must learn to live harmoniously with their environment through the five senses.

Most of us are familiar with one of the main tenets of the Yoga philosophy:

Yogas chitta vritii nirodhah
[yoga =union, to join; chitta = mutable thoughts of the mind-field; vritti = mental fluctuations/modifications, nirodhah = coordination, regulation, integration, channeling]

Yoga is the coordinated channeling of the gross and subtle thought patterns of the mind. —trans. by Swami Jnaneshvara

A human being as a whole is a combination of body, mind and spirit—physical, mental (psychological) and spiritual dimension. When we just think of ourselves as a physical body, we lose this awareness and through our five senses we get attracted to material possessions and surround ourselves with them. As we continue to build more material desires, we start making wrong choices. As a result, frustration and stress builds up and we lose our connection with the mind and spirit. This leads to mental imbalance/fluctuations (vrittis) leading to physical instability. Healing is the process of regulating the impressions that we draw in with total awareness through the five senses and returning to harmony. Once back in harmony, the body and the mind have no reason to communicate the imbalances. It is only through experience and awareness that we gradually awaken to the true role of our senses. Enlightenment is when we have a control over our senses and perform only those activities that not only empower us but the society as well. Such beneficial activities do not disturb the natural balance of the body or the society. The body is at ease; the mind attains peace.

Epilepsy and its Homeopathic Management!

Recently I happened to see many cases of epilepsy in succession and wondered why the number of epilepsy cases is increasing these days? Therefore, decided to write a detailed article on epilepsy and more importantly the homeopathic approach to a case of epilepsy. Let’s begin-

Definition-

Epilepsy is a disorder that results due to the surges in the electrical signals inside the brain causing recurring seizures. It is a common and diverse set of chronic neurological disorders characterized by seizures. This results in sudden alterations in the behavior or motor function caused by an electrical discharge from the brain.
But all the people who have seizures need not have epilepsy. Epilepsy is a group of related disorders characterized by a tendency for recurrent seizures. One must know about non-epileptic seizures too. These are also called pseudo-seizures, which are not accompanied by abnormal electrical activity in the brain but are caused mostly due to some psychological issue or stress. Therefore, distinguishing between the two is important before case-evaluation is started.

Incidence- About 2 out of 100 people in United States experience at least one unprovoked seizure once in life. However, for a diagnosis of epilepsy to be made, one has to have at least 2 unprovoked seizures. Shortly, one can say that about 0.5 to 1% of the total population is affected by epilepsy and the incidence is sadly increasing. About 30% of cases occur in children. Children and elderly adults are most often affected.

Provoked Seizures- Provoked seizures occur due to some or the other reasons like low blood sugar, trauma, low blood sodium, drug abuse, alcohol, high-grade fever, etc. fever-related or febrile seizures usually start in infancy and the child outgrows on its own by 6 years of age.

Causes of Epilepsy-
As with many neurological disorders, in most cases of epilepsy, the definite cause (from the conventional point of view) cannot be ascertained. Typically however, the known causes of seizures involve some or the other injury to the brain. Here are enlisted some such causes-
1. Low oxygen during birth (asphyxia neonatorum)
2. Head injuries during childhood or infancy or birth of the baby
3. Brain tumors
4. Viral / bacterial meningitis / encephalitis
5. Stroke or any other damage to the brain
6. Abnormality in sodium or sugar levels, etc
However, in majority of the cases, the cause cannot be found.

Risk Factors that may provoke seizures –
1. Heavy alcohol consumption
2. Cocaine or any other drug used for ecstasy
3. Absolute lack of sleep
4. Other drugs that interfere with the seizure medication that the patient is already on
5. Menses- 1 in every 2 women having epilepsy, seizures occur around menstruation perhaps owing to hormonal surges

Clinical Features of Epilepsy-
Epilepsy is divided into 2 basic types- 1. Generalized and 2) Focal

1. Generalized Seizures-
These seizures usually occur without any warning because of abnormal electrical impulses in the brain. Of this, 6 types have been recognized-

(1) Grand-mal (Tonic-Clonic) seizures- The patient often loses consciousness in this type of seizure and may collapse. During the tonic phase, the body becomes stiff and during the clonic phase, body jerks. The patient’s jaw is tight shut and he even might bite his tongue. Due to repeated contractions of the bladder, the patient might have involuntary urination and later falls into a deep sleep. All these symptoms may last for as little as 1 to 2 minutes or sometimes longer.

(2) Petit-mal (Absence) seizure- These are briefer episodes during which classic symptoms are absent but the patient might lose awareness for mere 5 to 10 seconds and stare blankly. However, these kinds of seizures usually occur several times in a day.

(3) Clonic Seizure- In this type, there is rhythmic jerking motion of the arms and the legs, sometimes on the both sides of the body.

(4) Tonic Seizure-Suddenly a group of muscles stiffens in this type making the patient to fall if he is standing. It also lasts for short durations like about 20 seconds.

(5) Myoclonic Seizure- In this type, very brief seizure occurs, due to which your body jerks as if shocked by electricity, for a second or two. The jerks can range from a single muscle jerking to involvement of the entire body.

(6) Akinetic or Atonic Seizure- In this type, the seizure makes the muscles to lose strength or relax. It especially occurs in arms or legs. These seizures are often referred to as “drop-attacks”, because though the patient may remain conscious, it can cause him to fall suddenly and injure himself.

2. Focal Seizures-
They are also termed as local or partial seizures. They are caused by abnormal activity in a specific smaller area of brain. That area is called as seizure focus. They can be of three types again- Simple focal, complex focal, and secondarily generalized seizures.

Diagnosis of Epilepsy-
In the diagnosis of epilepsy, for both conventional therapists and homeopaths, history of the patient and the clinical examination of the patient are crucial. Most of the times, if the symptoms are of classic variety, diagnosis can be made clinically. But in cases of partial or singular variety seizure, one has to do certain investigations like CT scan and/or MRI of the Brain and EEG (Electro-Encephalogram) to find the abnormal brain activity.

Homeopathic Approach to a Case of Epilepsy-
Dealing with epilepsy patient homeopathically is a challenge. The homeopath has to be on his toes while dealing with an active case of epilepsy. However, it can be said that homeopathy can very well deal with these cases, provided the entire case history of the patient (child or adult) is studied carefully. As we often say, constitutional homeopathic treatment is the right option for epilepsy cases. I have always found that even though with our acute remedies act wonderfully well to control the acute epilepsy attacks and avert the recurrence, only apt constitutional and miasmatic study is the way out to CURE the patient.

How History is Important?
Finding out the cause of epilepsy (if existent) like any kind of birth injury or other sort of head injury is absolutely crucial. The cases in which we can trace out the exact cause, further work is comparatively easier. If such external cause cannot be found, one has to go to the core details of the conception of the child, any history during pregnancy of mother and most importantly family history.

Miasm-
The miasmatic study depending upon the family history of the patient is very important. Many theories have been published at many places. But after studying many cases of epilepsy, I have found that though Psora can be called as the basic miasm behind such abnormal brain activities, sycotic dominance in the families is often noticed. Certainly being a generalized variety of disorder, all miasms overlap each other at different periods of time. Even hyperactivity of brain can go under tubercular miasm, especially when the patient has very short duration spells and twitching of different groups of muscles. I can say that while making miasmatic study of epilepsy, one should not generalize but individualize it in every case separately, considering all the aspects that lead to apt miasmatic diagnosis.

Homeopathic Treatment of Epilepsy-

Here comes the most important part of the article. As with any other case, classical homeopathy believes in holistic approach for every case of epilepsy. Considering the physical, mental and emotional picture of every patient (whether child or adult) is must while dealing with epileptic cases. If you base your prescription merely on physical symptoms of epilepsy and seizure type, the recovery may be temporary. However, this does not mean every case of epilepsy is begun with constitutional remedy. Rather. Going for the constitutional remedy in the beginning can prove disastrous, if we do not prepare our patient first to receive the constitutional dose well. Yes, it is true of every chronic case that the patient must be in the right time-frame when we administer the constitutional remedy. And also during the treatment, all acute phases should be handled deftly with apt acute prescriptions.

Do not stop anti-epileptic drugs suddenly-

This is a very crucial thing to know for homeopaths as well as parents of the children suffering from epilepsy. Beginning on homeopathic regime does not warrant canceling the drug dosages of earlier anti-epileptic remedies the child may be on. Give the patient enough time to respond positively to the new homeopathic regimen while retaining the earlier dosages. Once the epileptic episodes are decreased with proper homeopathic treatment, we can taper off the dosages after consulting the seizure expert and finally stop the anti-epileptic drugs if patient starts responding very much positively to homeopathy.

Now, herewith we will discuss some of such acute and chronic epilepsy medicines, which can prove extremely helpful in managing the cases of epilepsy—

1) Absinthium-
·         One of the best remedies for infantile and hysterical spasms
·         The child suffers from nervous tremors before the attack
·         Sleeplessness in the child is the striking concomitant symptom
·         The child or the adult suffers from severe giddiness suddenly, has varied hallucinations and loss of consciousness ensues
·         The child suffers from frightful visions and striking loss of memory
·         Kleptomania- tendency to steal things is one of the characteristic symptom of this drug

2) Artemisia vulgaris-
·         Have seen this drug act extremely well in nervous teenage girls that suffer from epileptiform seizures
·         Girls suffering from petit mal seizures after some emotional breakdown or fright
·         Masturbation leading to epilepsy
·         There is a convulsive episode in these children, as several convulsions run together
·         Epilepsy without any significant aura
·         Somnambulism- walks in sleep at night
·         Head drawn backwards during seizure with spasmodic twitching
·         Mouth drawn to left
·         Profuse sweating that smells like garlic is a classic concomitant found most of the times

3) Cuprum metallicum-
·         This is one of the best remedies for epilepsy, recommended by the stalwart in homeopathy- Dr Schwart

Home Practice The Best Way to Improve Your Health and Well Being Rerun

by Timothy McCall
Bed in a Mirror by Nina Zolotow
"If you are taking yoga classes but not practicing at home, you may be missing the best—and potentially most therapeutic—part of yoga. Your personal practice is where the deepest work happens, when you go inward and go at your own pace."—from Yoga As Medicine

This quotation from my book got posted on Facebook the other day and generated quite a bit of interest. But not everyone, particularly those who only take classes, agrees with the statement. A woman came up to me at a yoga conference earlier this year to say she’d heard me make a similar comment at a workshop I taught in Los Angeles a few years ago, and it made her really angry. It’s easy to understand that reaction when your experience in class has been so positive, and even healing.

But now scientific research seems to back up the notion that a regular home practice really is the key to health and well-being, perhaps particularly so as we get older. A study recently published in the journal Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine by researchers at the University of Maryland and the National Institutes of Health found that, among more than 1000 practitioners of Iyengar yoga, the frequency of home practice predicted positive health more than how long you’ve been practicing or how many classes you attend per week. According to the article Frequency of yoga practice predicts health: results of a national survey of yoga practitioners:

“Frequency of home practice favorably predicted (p < .001): mindfulness, subjective well-being, BMI, fruit and vegetable consumption, vegetarian status, sleep, and fatigue.”

In other words, those who practiced at home the most reported better health and well-being, greater awareness of themselves and others, improved sleep, less fatigue, and healthier body weight. They were even more likely to eat their vegetables!

The study bore out something else I’ve been teaching for years: when you combine the various tools in the yoga toolbox including asana, breathing practices, meditation and even study of yoga philosophy you tend to get even better results. As the authors put it, “an intense practice involving all aspects of yoga practice may be more beneficial to health than a less intense practice that includes only one or two aspects of yoga practice, such as just practicing the physical poses or breath work.”

There also appeared to be additional benefits for combining different types of asana practices, such as standing poses, vigorous practices like Sun Salutations, restorative poses including Savasana, and inversions like Shoulderstand. Different practices appeared to be particularly beneficial for specific conditions. Vigorous asana and inversions seemed to help the most with insomnia and body weight, whereas, according to the authors, “because breath work and meditation appear to influence mindfulness and well-being, they may be particularly useful in treating conditions such as depression and anxiety.”

One finding that may be of particular interest to readers of this blog has to do with fatigue. Overall, older practitioners had less fatigue than younger practitioners, but both groups improved when they did yoga. But it appears to take less practice for older practitioners to experience improvements in energy.

As for the woman who was mad at me for saying that a home practice was more important than going to classes, she went on to say that, almost despite herself, she did try doing her yoga at home. Now she does it regularly and believes it’s the most important part of her practice. She thanked me profusely, though of course most of all she can thank herself!

Friday Q A Chiropractors Physical Therapists and Yoga

Q: Several times I have been told that yoga is not recommended by chiropractors and physical therapists. Could you clarify why this might be so?

A: Basically I think this is because the health professional is not a practitioner of yoga. Like any physical and spiritual discipline, recommendations can only come from the basis of personal practice as well as a good understanding of what the limitations of a yoga practice might be. If the health professional is ill-educated on what yoga is and believes that yoga is a gymnastic set of exercises that can only be achieved by the super flexible, then of course they would not recommend this type of “exercise” to a patient who has an injury.

Many chiropractors, physical therapists and other medical practitioners may be hesitant to recommend yoga to their patients because they believe that there is no unified certification for people to teach yoga and therefore they may believe it is very difficult to find trained yoga teachers for someone with a back injury (or other injuries and chronic conditions) who is currently experiencing an injury or who is not in good shape. These medical professionals may believe that yoga teachers (blanket statement here) are generally not medical professionals, and therefore they don’t have an understanding of the human body and should not teach yoga at all to people with injuries because it is dangerous - in that they don’t understand the injury and they might MAKE you do something you aren’t ready for causing more injury and pain. (Because yoga certification is a point under discussion now and because all teacher trainings are not equal and all yoga teachers are not qualified to work with a student therapeutically, I do believe that it is important for a student with an injury to interview the teacher before they begin classes with them to make sure that they feel comfortable working with the teacher and that the teacher feels comfortable working with their injury. It is critical that there is a good fit between teacher and student, and that the student feels safe in the class and confident of the teacher’s training.)

On the other hand, many chiropractors and physical therapists (including me—I am a physical therapist) DO recommend yoga as part of the therapeutic healing process, but instruct the student on what poses they either should avoid or what poses need to be modified to limit range of motion. I use the teaching of asana for everyone that I work with. I work with very frail home-bound individuals in my capacity as a home health physical therapist and every single one of them is taught some type of yoga. Everyone breathes, but not all of us breathe efficiently so learning to work on posture and intention while breathing is a wonderful yogic therapeutic tool that is accessible to everyone, not just the young and fit! And yes, this is yoga.

Chiropractors are medical practitioners who treat the body, structurally as well as energetically, and there are many schools of chiropractic treatment approaches. Some practitioners are very biomechanically-based and others are more eclectic in their treatment approaches. The same can be said for physical therapists. Some are very biomechanically based and focus their entire treatment approaches on a biomechanical model. If the theory is that “structure always dictates function” and “function dictates structure,” that is the lens through which the body will be seen. In my opinion the biomechanical model is important but it doesn’t always explain why a problem lingers. This is where, in my opinion, yoga can come in because not only will the structure be addressed, but so will the other factors that influence the restoration of optimum function.

Hypertension High Blood Pressure and Yoga An Overview

by Baxter
Complexity in Nature by Brad Gibson
On these hallowed pages, we have previously addressed several conditions that involve our cardiovascular system (heart and blood vessels), such as arrhythmias, strokes, hypotension and hypertension (also referred to as high blood pressure). We even have at least six posts that at least mention hypertension (HTN). However, due to the large percentage of adults who will develop hypertension over the course of their lifetimes, I thought it worth revisiting. According to the NIH, in 1999-2002, 28.6% of the U.S. population had hypertension. And this number seems to be on the rise. Plus, there is yet another study that demonstrates yoga’s beneficial effect on lowering blood pressure in those with mild to moderate hypertension! (For background information about what blood pressure is, see So, what is blood pressure, anyway?)

Why all the hype about hypertension (high blood pressure), anyway? Well, if you have hypertension, you are at an increased risk of developing other more serious health problems, including heart attacks, strokes, congestive heart failure, rupture of your aorta (your largest blood vessel), chronic kidney disease, blockages in your leg's blood vessels, and  vision problems.

Some people develop hypertension secondary to the presence of some other health condition that leads to high blood pressure, such as chronic kidney disease (hey, wasn’t that just mentioned?!), diseases of the adrenal and parathyroid glands (part of our endocrine system), pregnancy, and few very common medications, such as certain cold medications and birth control pills.

And some people are at a higher risk of developing hypertension, if any of the following factors are present for you:
  • obesity
  • diabetes
  • smoking
  • chronic stress and anxiety
  • excessive use of alcohol
  • excessive use of salt
  • family history of hypertension
  • African American ancestry
Part of the frustration for people who are diagnosed with hypertension is that they often don’t have any really noticeable symptoms. I can’t tell you how many times I diagnosed a patient in my family practice with high blood pressure when they came in for a routine annual exam with no real complaints, or were in the office for some unrelated complaint, like a cold or headaches. This is why HTN is often referred to as the “silent killer,” as you may not know you have it until one of its complications like stroke or heart attack strike you.

It’s been known now for at least 40 years that yoga practices can help lower blood pressure in people with HTN, starting back in the 60s and 70s with the work of Herbert Benson, MD, a cardiologist who used a particular kind of yogic meditation popular at the time (TM or transcendental meditation) to help lower the blood pressure in his patients who were not responding as expected to the newest medications of that era. Since then, other studies have shown similar results, including the newest study from the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, still in progress, which is following 120 patients with mild to moderate elevations in their blood pressure. Already, with 58 people completing the study so far, there is small but significant decreases in blood pressure readings in the yoga group. This could be of greatest importance to patients who are labeled with “pre-hypertension,” where the blood pressure readings fall between 120/80 and 140/90.  This group of people is at much higher risk of going on to develop full HTN and is at higher risk than the general population of serious situations such as stroke and heart attack. However, if treated with yoga, they could drop their numbers low enough to avoid the need for medications to do the job.  In previous posts, Nina and Shari have talked about kinds of asana practices that have been shown to lower blood pressure, such as forward bends and certain inversions, as well as the effect on the baroreceptors that monitor and influence blood pressure moment by moment.  See Blood Pressure: Talking About Baroreceptors and Yoga and Just in Time for the Holidays: Inverted Poses.

As to how you might incorporate yoga practices into your efforts to lower your own rising blood pressure, you would likely want to add it to a broader approach to treatment, instead of substituting yoga for medications, for instance. Usually, a combination of aerobic activity, dietary changes, appropriate salt restriction, stopping tobacco use, lowering stress, and achieving an optimal body weight are the first line actions recommended when you are diagnosed with HTN. As we have shown before, yoga can help with many of those goals, such as weight management and stress, as well as improving will power, which could help with establishing all of those changes suggested from your usual dietary and lifestyle habits. But, independent of that, as this newest study again points out, yoga helps lower blood pressure on its own. It can do it via a balanced asana practice, via meditation practices and via breathing techniques. It is, of course, frustrating for those of us familiar with this data, that mainstream medicine has not embraced this cost-effective modality to any significant degree. If it were a pill, I suppose, it would be a no-brainer.

And for those interested in developing a home practice for hypertension, due to the multiple factors that could influence your unique situation, I highly recommend you work one-on-one with an experienced yoga instructor to create the optimal practice for you. Yoga for high blood pressure? You bet!
